Beauty Salon of the Year 2012 & 2013 – Professional Beauty Awards

We are over the moon to announce that we have won Beauty Salon of the Year at the Professional Beauty Awards 2013, for the second year in a row! Video here.

Sam interviewed by The Formation Company’s blog

“Frustrated that many spas are cold, clinical and lack a fun and friendly atmosphere, Sam Pearce decided to start her own: The Potting Shed Spa. A few years later and Sam was the proud recipient of the Best Start Up Award at the 2012 Mumpreneur ceremony, and has watched her business go from strength to strength. This week, Sam kindly offered to tell us a little about her journey.

Nominee Badge 2014

Sam Pearce, owner and creator of the Potting Shed Spa has been nominated for an award for the health and beauty sector – results announced in October

Sam Pearce crowned winner at the Mumpreneur Awards 2012

Sam Pearce was crowned winner at the Mumpreneur Awards 2012 – for Best New Start Up Business – this is a national award that recognises an entrapaneurial mum in business who has created the biggest impact in the shortest space of time.

Sam’s business, The Potting Shed – a quirkily themed beauty spa with a difference, was chosen by a panel of independent judges that included Editor of Glamour Magazine, Jo Elvin. The award, sponsored by hibu, was presented on Sunday 30th September at the Heart of England Conference Centre in Warwickshire.

After receiving her award, Sam said: “I was absolutely delighted to win the award for Best Start-Up – I am still on cloud nine! The whole day was so inspiring and empowering for women in business, I feel honoured to have been recognised by this truly amazing organisation.”

Our Yorkshire Personal Branding Hero 2. Sam Pearce, Owner, The Potting Shed Spa and Eastthorpe Hall (@spadidah and @pottingshedspa on Twitter)

Sam Pearce won the Best Start Up at the Mumpreneur UK Awards 2012 and Best British Salon at the Professional Beauty Awards for her Potting Shed Spa business. She came up with the unique health and beauty concept to complement her parents’ Eastthorpe Hall spa business, which she is a partner in. Both West Yorkshire-based businesses are high end health and beauty salons and it’s not easy to sell such a luxury product/service in such a tough market. But Sam has found the magic ingredient to make them something really special that is worth the reasonable expense.

So, how has she done it? She has combined a unique business concept with a powerful personal brand that helps her understand and emotionally connect with her audiences. Through her corporate brand, Sam tells a story in which she casts herself as the main protagonist online, in the press and on TV. This helps her build trust, credibility and meaningful relationships. It also demonstrates her passion and gives her customers someone to relate to. Someone who is a working mother. Someone who is down to earth, has strong beliefs and values and who never compromises on quality or attention to detail.

Someone they aspire to be like. She has deliberately differentiated herself from competitors by creating a high end product that rivals London salons but is nestled in rural Yorkshire. Everything from her staff to the food served at the salons is home-grown and that is the appeal for her local customers and tourists alike.

But, despite both her businesses being very much local, she has gained national recognition for them from beauty editors of glossy women’s magazines, tabloids and broadsheet newspapers as well as judges of major beauty industry and business awards. This is powerful third party endorsement that has come from her ability to build and maintain relationships with influencers.

When it comes to social media, there are some major benefits to being the owner of a small company. People like Alan Sugar act as the face of their companies but they are not ‘hands on’. Sam, on the other hand, replies personally to all comments and reviews about both of her businesses on Twitter. The Potting Shed Spa website says: “The warmth of the heart prevents the body from rusting” and Sam personifies the warmth and heart of the business.

She says: “We’re very homely and friendly. There are no clocks here and clients are not on a conveyor belt. Our approach to spa-going is very personal, hands-on and bespoke.” But she doesn’t just say it; she lives and breathes it by living on site with her family: “I really need to live here because running a spa is a 24-hour-a-day job.” People can engage with brands, but the connection is much deeper when there is a real person behind the brand. Her ongoing
engagement via social media means that Sam’s brand story is always evolving.

I don’t think I’ve been anywhere that has looked after me better – in the warm, friendly, caring kind of way. My shoulders dropped two inches from the moment I arrived thanks to the picture-perfect setting, the scent of a roaring open fire and the warm staff.

I arrived at the spa in Batley, West Yorkshire ready for my appointment, and was so excited to have a good look around – this place is amazing, stunning, beautiful, extraordinary… there’s just not enough words! Instead of cold and sterile, like I imagine many spas to be, this place was so welcoming, so warm and cosy that I felt right at home in no time….

What better way to spend a dreary damp Thursday night than visiting the ‘Best British Beauty Salon’ along with a blogging/gym/work buddy. Throw in some good food, a glass of bubbly and meeting royalty and you have the perfect girlie evening.

Last night The Potting Shed Spa, Redbrick Mill, Batley played host to ‘The Eyebrow Queen’ herself Nilam Patel, brow beater to the stars and founder of the HD Brows brand!

From My Beauty Journal

Words cannot describe how good this massage actually was. It was an hour of pure bliss! Amazingly, I was never a big fan of massages beforehand and they were never a treatment I would choose. That has now changed and if I could, I would have one every week… During the massage the bed is heated throughout the treatment which I have never experienced before and I can tell you I did not want to get out at the end of the treatment!

The therapist performed an amazing massage with just the right amount of pressure ( she asked me about this before the treatment) and I was left feeling really relaxed at the end of it. I cannot recommend this treatment highly enough.

Walking into The Potting Shed Spa for the first time I inwardly muttered a little “wow”.

From Madeleine Thompson – August 2012

Be prepared to take on a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘green fingers’ with this slightly bonkers but absolutely brilliant new spa; ‘The Potting Shed‘ . Set in the picturesque location of West Yorkshire at the stunning Redbrick Mill, the 5 star luxury spa reflects that of a London profile, despite it’s countryside location which has consequently lead to The Potting Spa going straight into number 2 for being Professional Beauty’s ‘Most Inspiring Salons’ in just 12 months.

Fall into the hessian Chesterfield armchair for a relaxing madi or pedi, with the treatments including freshly cut mint which has just been snipped from the nearest terracotta plant pot whilst you sip a delicious green smoothie with the essence of freshly cut grass drifting in your direction.

Professional Beauty Awards 2012 – Best British Salon – Winner!

The team at the Potting Shed are delighted to announce that after only 9 months we have been crowned Best British Salon at the Professional Beauty & World Spa Awards 2012.

Also congratulations to Faye at our sister site Eastthorpe Hall for reaching the final for Therapist of the Year.

Via tripadvisor, November 2012

I am a regular customer at Eastthorpe and I am never disappointed, a day there is really the most amazing experience. My daughter and I recently enjoyed the special Pinks Boutique treatment day which proved to be one of the best ever. The range of treatments was particularly well designed and we had a lovely balance between treatments and chill out
time.

Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea was, as ever, stunning. I can’t recommend this spa enough and it doesn’t win all its awards for nothing. Don’t forget to visit its little sister, the Potting Shed for individual treatments- they do the best deluxe manicure in the world.

“I was late to my appointment due to horrific traffic, but the lady on the phone and my therapist made me feel very at ease. The welcome squeeze was lovely and the drink made me feel very relaxed.
Excellent treatment in a lovely setting and I really liked the therapist who was friendly and chatty without being insincere and irritating. My favourite beauty salon in the North. I recommend it to all my friends.
Thank you ladies.”

“I know things are tough for everyone, the economy and the weather, but I thought I would treat myself to a bit of pampering as I was at my lowest ebb. You had been recommended by a couple of friends, but I thought it was just hype! I cannot explain in words the effect my time with you has had on every level. My life has been really hard, and climbing into your treatment bed with a warm hot water bottle for my tummy and my toes, under the fluffy duvet was sublime, it took me back to being tucked in by mum, who I lost recently, I lay there as unctions and potions were applied with such care and attention, my heart heaved a happy feeling that I hadn’t felt in a long long time, big fat tears rolls down my now beautiful skin and I felt safe and cared for. I don’t think you will ever know what you have done for me, there aren’t the words”

Sam, by email, March 2013

Excellent service and squeezed me in for additional treatment even though really busy. Sorted out various appointments flexibly. As always friendly and efficient. Excellent spa

Zahraa, by email, February 2012

The therapist (Kristi) was brilliant. Gentle and reassuring, she made me feel at ease and spent time making sure she did a good job. And she did. Excellent customer service would definitely recommend it to anyone. Best spa have been to. I will be returning.

Helen, by email, January 2013

I was fortunate enough to find this place after a recommendation from a friend – wow wow wow – what an experience – never before have I experienced such exceptional care and attention – the staff were delightful – the place is stunning and the treatments – well – out of this world! A huge thanks to the team – you are all brilliant! See you very very soon.

By email, January 2013

Please will you thank Rebecca for the best facial I have ever had. I can hardly keep awake after the treatment, and my skin feels fabulous.Although I think I need stronger anti ageing serum in the mix. Thank you too for giving me such a treat , I loved every moment. The Potting shed looks really pretty in January and was a lot warmer than where I live.

From Katie, email, December 2012

“All I can say is WOW – just had the Hoe Hoe Hoe package – what outstanding customer service, quality of staff, the treatments are TO DIE FOR – one of the best experiences I have EVER had – you just have to treat yourself” – a very very happy customer.

From Lucy, email, November 2012

Kristi even manages to make underarm waxing bearable, and she worked wonders on my sparse brows, managing to find a shape and tint them but still make them look natural – I am delighted. As always a trip to the Potting Shed is an absolute pleasure, and I was delighted to meet Sam in this occasion who was the perfect hostess.

Absolutely amazing treatment and came home as relaxed as I have felt in a very long time. Already booked again. Thank you….

From Rebecca, email, September 2012

Every experience I have had at the Potting Shed has been wonderful.

From Yorkshire Living, August 2012

The sister spa of the multi award winning Eastthorpe Hall in Mirfield opened a year ago to give guests the opportunity to sample essential maintenance treatments like manicures, pedicures, waxing and tanning, as well its signature body and facial treatments in a boutique environment.

As its name suggests it has a gardening theme, which it takes extremely seriously. Glancing down the treatment list, you can have your “neglected hedges trimmed and pruned” – or a bikini wax – with the option of “borders only” or “full landscaping”.

I left feeling completely pampered and a week later my toes still looked perfectly polished.

From The Spa Traveller – July 2012

From the moment I read the treatment menu, with its tongue-in-cheek itemised listings of manicures, pedicures and waxing (my favourite being the pruning section) I knew I was in for a real treat! The quirky surroundings (a very plush ‘Potting Shed’) and chemical-free treatments invigorated my senses from the moment that I walked through the door.

Unlike any other ‘Boutique Style’ spa, that I have visited, the owners Sam Pearce and Stephanie Barraclough, have created a vibrant environment with an organic twist and provided natural treatments that complement their ‘garden themed’ surroundings.

As I glided towards the door, with my feet feeling fantastically beach worthy Sam, the owner of the Potting Shed, had just finished her specialist HD Brow treatment with a client who had travelled internationally to have her signature treatment! The next time I visit I’ll be sure to try it.

@spadidah – Congratulations on your award – I am so proud of you xx

From Dancing through the Fire – May 2012

The Potting Shed Spa aims to break the boundaries of what people expect from spas with their environment and service making the overall experience unforgettable. The spa is situated in the unique Redbrick Mill in Batley, West Yorkshire, and is an amazing space full of quirky decorations, bunting and fairy lights…

The spa put on a lovely event, with champagne and canapés on tap, and a lovely team who made sure everyone was enjoying themselves. I really enjoyed learning about the services, and sampling a few products, and would recommend the spa to anyone looking for something a bit different.

From Indulge In – May 2012

The Potting Shed smells so delightful and hides so many treats. With treatments available such as ‘Lady Garden – Border Only’ (bikini wax to you and me), we were more than a little bit intrigued.

We were pounced on, in a very nice way, by a member of the delightful salon staff as soon as we entered. A glass of bubbly was forced in each of our hands (OK…we didn’t need much persuading) and we were shown to one of the very large and oh so comfy seats to be pampered and pruned by Kirstie Allen – Owner and Founder of Pinks Boutique…

…We found ourselves sinking further and further into the big cream arm-chairs . Cuticle oil was applied followed by Hand Balm. To complete, nails were ‘buffed’ using the miracle buffer, which leaves nails with a natural shine, no polish is required.

Its hardly surprising that The Potting Shed, after only 9 months has been crowned Best British Salon at the Professional Beauty & World Spa Awards 2012. Well done girls.

From Beauty Butterfly Blog – May 2012.

It’s such a refreshing change to see some proper professionalism in a beauty salon, the ladies in the spa really seemed to be enjoying what they were doing…

…The Potting Shed won Best British Salon at this years Pro Beauty Awards so I was expecting great things; and they definitely didn’t disappoint!

The interior decoration really is wonderful, so welcoming and so Yorkshire! Watering cans, gnomes, plants… everything you’d expect to find in a gardening environment but in a really clean and fresh way.

…no word of a lie this was the best manicure I have ever had in my life and I cannot thank the Potting Shed enough, I will definately be going back for some treatments here because it’s the best salon/spa experience I’ve ever had. I’m also keen to try their day spa, Eastthorpe Hall which should be absolutely fantastic if this is anything to go by.

From Yummy Working Mummy – March 2012

The ethos of The Potting Shed is to provide first class treatments in a relaxed and informal setting… …From the moment I arrived at The Potting Shed Spa I knew I was in for a real treat

I was whisked away to the peace and tranquility of the treatment room, and snuggled into my treatment bed, I was even given a hot water bottle for maximum comfort. I had the Potting Shed signature facial – awarded ‘Best facial in the UK’.

The blend of complete relaxation combined with a maintenance facial leaves you feeling like you’ve been really pampered and had deep relaxation. I really could have stayed all day!

This is an amazing place and perfect for ladies either wanting maintenance treatments in real comfort or like me wanting a pamper treatment of a Spa but haven’t the time for a full day.

From Charlie, by email, November 2012

Just wanted to give feedback on the excellent customer service I received from your staff Kristi & Kim today. I came to your spa with my mum for the first time and I was very impressed. We were looking for a Christmas gift for my aunt who has recently visited your spa at Easthorpe and has been using your products for her sensitive skin for the last few months. We were unsure of what to choose for her but with excellent expertise, product knowledge & patience from Kristi & Kim we were able to choose the perfect selection of gifts. Kristi & Kim took time to explain the products in a way we could both could understand and nothing was too much trouble for them. My profession is customer experience so I recognise excellent customer service when I see it. I believe experiences like this should be recognised, shared and in turn rewarded and I hope you take pleasure in knowing your staff are living and breathing your business goals.

Well done girls and I will certainly be spreading the good news about “The Potting Shed Spa”

From Michelle, April 2012

I had to email to say a big thank you – we came today for treatments, we all had a wonderful time. everyone was so warm and friendly and the treatments amazing. Cant wait to come back again!!! thank you Michelle xxx

From Justine Haworth – by email – March 2012

Just wanted to say warmest congratulations to you and the team at the gorgeous Potting Shed on your success in this year’s professional beauty awards. What an amazing achievement – you should all feel very proud of yourselves. I have just one request. Don’t tell everyone!! The Potting Shed and Easthorpe are my ‘not so guilty’ pleasures and I love recommending you to my nearest and dearest because I know they they will think so too.

Keep on being amazing and see you very soon.

From Insight with Passion – September 2011

Customer First…

Being a busy working mum, its really a struggle to put yourself first.

I’ve always enjoyed a full life, but the last year has seen very little time for “me” time. It was therefore a delight to get a little bit of my sunday in the Potting Shed Spa yesterday. Before any of you tune out – this is a blog about customer service – not nail varnish – so read on.

The new venture at RedBrick Mills part of the Easthorpe Spa Group is a light, bright day spa with a difference.

Retail theatre runs though the building with “potter” dressed therapists. The ambiance is more refreshing and uplifting than traditional spa’s.

Best of all for me – Sunday opening. I was delighted that one of the very best (award winning) spas has always only been a short distance from me – but its traditional opening hours and (understandably) no phone policy made the commitment to time an impossibility. Potting Shed shows a real understanding of busy lives.

Additionally the incredibly friendly staff, the most intuitive and professional therapist – Faye – who has always treated me at Easthorpe, and a great set of cute differences (your own retro tv when you have a pedicure to enjoy the dvd of your choice) saw me rebook immediately.

They have thought about the customer, put their needs first and made it happen…and that’s why I’m delighted to tell you that the Potting Shed will be the very first recipient of our Customer First Awards (launched 1st September).

My hearty congratulations to Faye and all the team there – carry on doing what you’re doing so well.

Potty about spa! Eastthorpe Hall’s new spa venture

The lovely folks at Eastthorpe Hall got in touch recently to let us know about their newest venture – The Potting Shed. A sister spa to their multi-award winning day spa in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, The Potting Shed in nearby Batley is offering a range of treatments to give spa-goers a taste of Eastthorpe in a boutique environment.

Apparently, everything in The Potting Shed is for sale – from the products your therapist uses to garden gnomes!

Of particular note is the mani-pedi area, which is furnished with individual televisions and headphones so you can “plug in and zone out”.

The Potting Shed assures us that they have developed a space far from the clinical white of a mainstream spa. Breaking the boundaries of what you’d expect from a spa experience, The Potting Shed tell us that they “have strong beliefs and work our socks off to ensure your experience in our spa is an unforgettable one”.

If The Potting Shed is anything like the award-winning Eastthorpe Hall, we’re certain this new venture should be high on your to-visit list – we can’t wait to go!

From Tales of a Beauty Journo

A spa that sparkles

Late afternoon it was off down the road to boutique day spa The Potting Shed for some champagne and finishing touches. Innovatively designed in the style of a gardener’s retreat, the rustic spa has a real sense of escapism, with quirky, decorative items such as gnomes and gardening tools taking pride of place alongside a huge array of beauty products. In keeping with the horticultural theme is the treatment menu; ‘Scythes and Shears’ represent signature manicure/pedicure options whilst ‘Pruning and clipping neglected hedges’ refers to waxing treatments.

Our day concluded with lovely nails inc mani-pedi’s. Lying back and relaxing, we enjoyed some episodes of FRIENDS that were being screened on small individual televisions complete with headphones – the perfect way to zone out and enjoy the pampering! Feeling very chilled I realised that The Potting Shed, totally unique in style and approach, would undoubtedly be the perfect choice for a hen party or group birthday celebration.

From Diary of a Yorkshire Girl

Yorkshire Girl Reviews: The Potting Shed Spa…

The ethos of the Potting Shed is to provide first class treatments in a more relaxed and informal setting than that of Eastthorpe Hall. Situated centrally to Batley in the old Redbrick Mill building, the team worked tirelessly to create a unique and quirky style reflecting the identity of this new venture… what was previously used as an industrial unit has been transformed into a gorgeous space full of individual features, bespoke furniture (available to purchase by order) and with the utmost attention to detail. Perfect for day visits or to follow a girl’s lunch date and shopping trip, it is fun and relaxed, yet with the same standard of excellence expected by their loyal customers.

Following the formalities I was whisked away to de-robe and settle myself on the table for my first treat of the day. I have to mention that aside from the silence (and by silence I mean pin-drop) there is such a sense of calm and peace that it would be impossible not to feel relaxed and chilled as one prepares to be pampered. I am always the first to feel the cold and have lost count of the occasions I have been forced to request either more blankets or heating. Not so here, each room was toasty and cosy, sweet smelling and spotless…

(And about our sister spa, Eastthorpe Hall) – So, having been whisked away from The Potting Shed I am driven a short distance to Eastthorpe Hall where I am to lunch and experience life on the ‘other’ side. As the door swings wide open and a beaming Steph ushers me in, the first thing I notice is the quiet.

It is impossible not to feel the stresses of day to day craziness fall away as you step into the sumptuous wood panelled surroundings and I am sure the doorstep is laden heavy with the worries left there routinely by clients before their entering in.

We are served a freshly made lunch of locally sourced ingredients with each dish introduced by the chef and ingredients explained for their various health giving qualities.

As we enjoy the stunning gardens and warm weather, we chat and devour the delicious food whilst quaffing crisp champagne. I discover almost everyone else there that day is a regular visitor, and all have high praise indeed for the spa, the staff and the standards of service.

Put simply, there are people who run spas, and there are people who run spas, and then there are Stephanie and Sam.

From The Press Newspaper

Spa has pots of potential …

A quirky new health and beauty spa opened at Batley’s Redbrick Mill this week.

The team behind Mirfield’s multi-award winning Eastthorpe Hall holistic spa have transformed a former hot tub store at the shopping mill into The Potting Shed, an exclusive salon specialising in quick-fix essentials such as waxing and manicures.

The Potting Shed is decked out, funnily enough, to resemble a potting shed with plant pots and watering cans on the shelves sprouting seedlings – and a treatment menu to fit.

Signature treatments include the “Scythes and Shears” manicure and waxing that promises to ‘prune and clip neglected hedges’.

Eastthorpe Hall, on Huddersfield Road in Mirfield, is officially the UK’s number one day spa and some of their signature treatments are available in their new environment at Redbrick, which opens to the public today (Fri).

Business partner Sam Pearce said: “It’s a totally different concept to Eastthorpe. At The Potting Shed attention to detail and timing are all-important and we’re using key members of Eastthorpe staff who suit a salon environment.
“We’re aiming for a tongue-in-cheek, eclectic feel and we’re really excited with what we’ve achieved.”

The Potting Shed is kitted out with two treatment rooms, four manicure/pedicure stations, a large waiting area with flat screen TVs and clients can enjoy cocktails and music through individual headphones while being preened and pampered.

“We wanted to create an environment like no other spa, where people can come and relax at a time and place that’s convenient for them,” Sam continued.
Easthorpe is now the highest-accredited day spa in the country and Sam says that the business has coped well since the economic downturn, with the company recently taking on more staff. “We haven’t panicked and done anything rash,” she said. “We’ve ridden it out because we know what we offer is a luxury, but people are finding that coping with stress is important.”

The Potting Shed held a special launch event for 150 VIP guests last night (Thurs).

From Professional Beauty

Eastthorpe Hall to open second spa

Professional Beauty Award-winning day spa Eastthorpe Hall is preparing to launch a second site in nearby Leeds.

The Potting Shed is scheduled to open in early June in Leeds’s Redbrick shopping centre.

Unlike Mirfield-based Eastthorpe Hall, which won PB’s Day Spa of the Year 2011 award in February, The Potting Shed will be a salon specialising in quick-fix essentials such as waxing and manicures, although some of the signature treatments from Eastthorpe will be adapted for the salon.

The salon will house two treatment rooms with face and body treatments using Elemis and Lava Shells, four mani/pedi stations and a large waiting area.

It will be decked out like a potting shed with plant pots and watering cans on the shelves sprouting seedlings and a treatment menu to fit. Signature treatments will include the Scythes and Shears manicure and waxing the promises to “prune and clip neglected hedges” with treatments including “Lady Garden, Borders Only”

Owner Sam Pearce said: “We’re aiming for a tongue-in-cheek, eclectic feel. Our gift vouchers will be called Hedge Funds and we’ll have a kids’ menu called saplings and seedlings.”

Really enjoyed the experience, massage and facial wonderful. Great to have a try of the new pinks range. Thanks Rebecca for a lovely Tuesday morning, great service :) .
